The time is just after the events of 358/2 Days, and half of the Organization XIII has been defeated inside Castle Oblivion, and Roxas has been rejoined with Sora. While Xemnas seeks a means to finish the Keyblade Master, an unseen force has slowly begun it's ploy. Everything is connected and all myriads of worlds are multiple timelines, with the walls between different dimensions falling, we have multiple earths becoming more numerous by the second. The eternal genesis of creation, time does not end, it merely repeats.
The reunion of worlds into one great heart is the ultimate goal; the heartless are the first stage, gathering worlds together by stealing their hearts, the counter measure to keep the worlds separate were the key blades that were made to ensure the worlds remained apart. The keys succeeded, but that is not the end, only the spark to a greater conflict.
The worlds are guided by the Gaia's pulse, the life stream flowing throughout the cosmos. Slowly they are hurtling toward each other in the great spiral of the Milky Way. When this is done, it will result in a big bang.
The initial merge shall not be a violent or destructive one, but it will expose realities and conflicts that are unimaginable. Worlds already merging are often at war with a new culture suddenly inhabiting formerly familiar places with new people and new ways that frighten them.
The Grand Kingdom, a colossal force of unknown origin, is determined to become the only true reality and thus unique. It tolerated other worlds apart in all the other realities, but to have multiple copies in one setting enrages them. They are the creators of the Kingdom Keys determined to keep the world separate by any means, the first being an earth shattering kaboom. The Grand Kingdom is a great world to live in but to other realities, it is the harbinger of unspeakable cruelty.
Fragmented Keys are the soldiers entering worlds and slowly building the Final WEAPON’s, massive planet busting abominations. The Grand Kingdom, powerful like unto gods, have drawn their weapons prepared to fight, and fight to the end.
The Heartless, most notably, Ansem and the few others, seek to harness the power of splitting planets to become gods and destroy the old ones. Traitorous, cruel, opportunistic. The Heartless front is the dark horse and they will destroy everything in their search for absolute power and knowledge.
Be they good or evil, all are on the same side, the struggle against Oblivion and total annihilation from The Grand Kingdom. For all our differences, for all our goals, the universe can easily see that if hero and villain fail to stand together they shall be broken and erased.
